Book Review for “Code of Silence”- Christian Middle Grade Mystery

What the book is about:

When Cooper, Hiro, and Gordy witness a robbery that leaves a man in a coma, they find themselves tangled in a web of mystery and deceit that threatens their lives. After being seen by the criminals—who may also be cops—Cooper makes everyone promise never to reveal what they have seen. Telling the truth could kill them. But remaining silent means an innocent man takes the fall, and a friend never receives justice.

Is there ever a time to lie? And what happens when the truth is dangerous?

The three friends, trapped in a code of silence, must face the consequences of choosing right or wrong when both options have their price.

My Review:

This one was a library check out. Took my little guy to the library and saw the set on display. The covers looked interesting and when I opened up to the inside cover saw they were Christian mystery for middle graders I had to get them. Book one was great. Main characters are junior high friends who’s faith and loyalty are tested. Two boys and a girl. Not preachy at all. Just a great “friends” mystery. There is no swearing, however there is some violence (robbery). I give it five stars. New author for me, but a new favorite. New author for me, but a new favorite. Can recommend for all ages, though written for middle grade (girls and boys both).

Here is a peak inside…

Prologue

“Where is the child?” Horace Acerbi calmly asked his son.

“Someplace safe,” answered the young man. “Did you think I was capable of taking care of a baby?”

“Your mother and I would have cared for the baby,” Horace replied as he removed a speck of lint from his suit coat.

The sixteen year old raised his eyebrows, but refused to rise to the bait. Looking his father in the eyes he waited silently.

“So you packed him off like old rubbish to be raised by strangers?” the father asked shaking his head in condemnation.

Still the young man kept his peace.

Horace walked to the window of his great domain and stood gazing out at the night sky.

“I suppose you didn’t give the mother much thought. She took the news rather hard, I am afraid. The housekeeper found her, just a short time ago, hanging from the chandelier in the nursery. It seems she used your old jump rope to do the job.”

“You lie!” the young man finally caved.

“Go see for yourself, I told them to leave her. I wanted you to see what you have accomplished by your willful disregard for propriety.”

“You want to lecture me about propriety?” yelled the youth as he ran from the room.

He took the stairs two at a time until he was on the third floor of the mansion. Blind with rage, out of breath, and riddled with guilt he burst through the door of his old nursery, and there cold and still, hung the body of the only person who had ever loved him…

This was a great Christian mystery. Not preachy, good clean fun. I will be reading the rest of the series. Reminds me of the mysteries I read as a kid. Easy reading, good writing, and just plain fun. I give it 4 stars, I really liked it. Good for teens and up

Book Review for “In the Spotlight: Mayne Attraction”- Fiction YA Romance

I liked “In the Spotlight” book one of “Mayne Attraction” series. I would have given it four stars, really liking it except for a few things. In the beginning, the prologue, we meet a couple of shady characters, they come in early in the first few chapters, never to be heard from again, the story ends (with a cliff hanger) never explaining who, or why they are in the story. I am assuming they come in later in one of the other books, but I found myself asking over and over, what about those guys. The characters are likable, similar to a lot of YA characters. The girl is shy, clumsy and doesn’t know she is beautiful, the guys are hot and handsome. I am still not sure where the series is going, I was anticipating a big twist, but was disappointed in the lack of one. Having said all of that, the book is told through the eyes of the 18 year old girl, the writing is good, there was a nice mix of humor, no swearing, the only sexual content is a few insinuations and nothing between the main characters, in fact they begin and end as virgins. So a lot to like about this book, and whenever the remaining books come out, I will read them. I can recommend for ages 14 and up. Definitely a chick book.

Book Review for “Daylight in Blossom” Christian Fiction

Another good Christian fiction story from Scott McElhaney. They are always .99 on amazon Kindle version. A girl with a troubled past. Her cousin who is her ‘superhero’ and some mystery. A great read. Simple writing style. Sound characters. Loved it. Will continue to read more from this author. I give “Daylight in Blossom” five stars.

Book Review for “Maximilian Standforth and the Case of the Dangerous Dare

My first taste of author Scott Southard was through his book “A Jane Austen Daydream”, which I loved, so I don’t know what I was really expecting from this book. Not at all like Jane Austen. This book proved to me the writing skill of Mr. Southard! I believe the man has quiet the imagination, albeit a twisted one. Maximilian Standforth is a mystery in the likes of Sherlock Holms, but with a case that, possibly, even he couldn’t solve. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and give it 5 stars.

Book Review for “Nobody” by Creston Mapes

This was a good Christian mystery. Loved the relationship part, the witness of the murder victim and the suspense. Would recomend it. There is an honesty in the story, could really happen. I found it very refreshing. Will be looking for more by this author. I give this book 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone who like a mystery. Not a chick-book, but I think a good read for women as well.
