I was given a copy of “The Land’s Whisper” in exchange for an honest review. This is a very well written fantasy. At first some of the language and names had me a little confused, however after a bit of reading I was able to work out what was meant. (in example measurements of miles and time were given fiction names). After finishing the kindle version I found the definitions in the back, so that might be a good place to start. The main characters are flawed and fleshed out. The story had me crying and laughing, and some places just plain cringing. There is no swearing or sexual content. There is torture and violence. It is after all a story of good versus evil. I give it five stars and can’t wait until the next book is out. Though it is part of a series, it has a clear ending. I give it five stars. I loved it.

Joy or Happiness?
Nehemiah 8:10 (NLT), “And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!”
“You deserve to be happy.”
“I just want you to be happy.”
“Why can’t I just be happy?”
“I am so happy right now.”
“I was just trying to make him happy.”
“Why can’t you just be happy for me?”
“When I get the promotion, then I’ll be happy.”
“Won’t you be happy when you get your new home?”
Happiness- a state of well-being and contentment
How many times have we heard these statements, or maybe even said them? Part of our Declaration of Independence reads, “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” as one of our rights as a citizen of the United States. I love being happy, don’t get me wrong, but just as much as I love happiness, I hate being un-happy! That’s the problem with happiness. It depends on what is taking place in our lives and most of the time there is a lot of stuff that is out of our control. When we are banking on something or someone to make us happy we are going to be disappointed at some point and maybe even quite frequently.
On the other hand, when we are surrendered to God, when we allow Jesus to come into our hearts, we have something much better available to us. It is called joy.
Joy-delight, great pleasure, joyfulness, jubilation, triumph, exultation, rejoicing, happiness, gladness, glee, exhilaration, exuberance, elation, euphoria, bliss, ecstasy, rapture
Because joy is not based on circumstances it is not something that comes and goes. If we are confident in the Lord, in His plans and purposes for us, when we know Who He is and who He says we are, we can be in a state of constant joy. The only time we lose it is if we allow the enemy to steal it, or we just forget Who He is or who we are. Simple.
I know it can be a little easier said than done, however the fact, the Truth that it is always available to us doesn’t change just because we forget. God the Father and His Joy is always only one step back. We live in a fallen world and we all go through hard times, difficult stuff. The difference is that when we go through it with Jesus we don’t lose our joy! In fact when we hold on to that joy the world will notice and we will be a witness for Him.
Happiness is fleeting, changeable, never constant, and always conditional. His joy is endless, wonderful, persistent, always available, never conditional and always trustworthy.
So do I want to be happy? Sure. But, I would rather have unspeakable joy!
I Peter 1:3-9 (KJB), “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”
Book Review for: “The Sarian’s Sword”-Christian fantasy/sci fi
I was given a copy of The Sarian’s Sword (Tales of Vantoria book 1) in exchange for an honest review. This is a great fantasy/sci fi read. It is unapologetically Christian and I loved the characters and the mix of modern and old in the story. A good allegory and I love those. I give it four stars. Fun read with a very good message that will get you thinking. No sexual content or swearing, there is fighting and violence (mild). I can recommend for teens and up.
Rest
Matthew 11:28-29 (NLT), “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
My spirit is confident in the finished work of Jesus. Yet, I still find myself feeling overwhelmed at times. Have you ever had one of those days when you feel like a hamster on a exercise wheel going round and round and not getting anywhere? Or maybe you thought you had finished your “to do” list only to find a million other things that need to be added? Maybe you are burdened with a big mortgage and not sure how you can make the payments. Sometimes it feel like you are a beast of burden that has an iron yoke around your neck. Possibly you are weary of work, any work, all work, work, work, work…
There is rest.
We aren’t under the Law any more, but there still remains a “Sabbath” rest for God’s people. The good news is that it isn’t a one day a week rest, it’s a full time, all the time rest.
Hebrews 4:9-11 (AMP), “ So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness].”
More good news, the work that we do is to enter into His rest.
What? I know it doesn’t make sense, but seriously a lot of what God asks us or tells us to do doesn’t. Work to rest? A paradox. Just like a Lion is a Lamb, the Sinless One became sin, God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How about this one, we surrender to get victory. We give up to get it all. I could keep going but you get the picture. Our minds are limited to our five senses. What we can see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. Our body is bound by time, and laws of nature. That’s why we can’t use our minds to figure God out. We walk in and by Faith.
When we understand, a heart understanding, who God is, who we are, and what our place is in His plans, we can be confident that no matter how bad things look, how bad we mess up, how many bad choices we make, His plan doesn’t change. It takes off all of the pressure. We do go to work. We apply ourselves at our jobs, but they aren’t our source, God is, heaven is. It’s not us that has to change the world. We just do what God says, and He changes hearts. The pressure isn’t on our great witnessing, or lack of it. It all hinges on just getting in a right relationship with the Father and letting Him use us however He sees fit.
Just like peace isn’t the absence of war, rest isn’t the absence of work!
Both are conditions of the heart.
We can be at peace and rest in confidence that He loves us.
So, on those days that I feel harassed or overworked it’s because I forgot the most important “work”, fellowship with Him. Not lip service, not fast-food ordering up blessings, not praying for my four and no more, but taking time to share and to listen.
Honestly, starting your day with acknowledging Him as Lord and master, telling Him how much you love Him, and allowing Him to reciprocate, will make your day go so much smoother. Not perfect or stress free, just 99.9 percent better.
Try it.
Rest… In Daddy’s arms.
How is Your Foundation?
Revelations 21:19-20 (KJB), “ And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.”
In the natural, nothing can be properly built without a solid foundation. The very first house we purchased had horrible one. We had to jack up the house and completely rebuild it. We hired someone who knew what he was doing and the house rested on that strong support. Spiritually speaking, our lives must also have a firm foundation. Not sure how to build one? No problem, God took care of that for us. He placed a cornerstone, the very first stone in the foundation that all the other stones are leveled against. This cornerstone has to be perfect, and perfectly square, or all of the other blocks will be unlevel and off kilter. This cornerstone, Jesus, is “safe to build on.”
Isaiah 28:16 (NLT), “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.”
I Corinthians 3:11 (NIV), “ For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Trying to build our lives on anything else is like the man who built his house in the sand. When the storms of life came, his whole world shifted and slid into the ocean. However the man who built his house on the Rock, nothing moved him. Sure the storms still came, but his foundation was sure, and “whoever believes need never be shaken.”
II Timothy 2:15-16a, 18-19 (HCSB), “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. But avoid irreverent, empty speech, for this will produce an even greater measure of godlessness. And their word will spread like gangrene… Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, having this inscription: The Lord knows those who are His, and everyone who names the name of the Lord must turn away from unrighteousness.”
It takes some effort to keep a foundation strong. The cornerstone never changes, but the other blocks, or stones need some care. When we are diligent to keep our relationship with the Father close, when we pray often, read our word, hear sound teaching, and press in to fully understand who we are in Christ, our foundation stays healthy. Those storms won’t knock us down. We will be able to withstand them in the strength of the Lord.
If we start depending on ourselves, back away from God, or look to anyone or anything else to “take care of us” our foundation will crumble. Then, even the smallest rain will corrode, and the slightest change in weather will corrupt. Once things start falling apart, it all happens so fast, before you know it, your entire house is gone. A faulty foundation leads to cracks in your walls, rolling and uneven floors, and eventually if not repaired or rebuilt, your doors won’t open or close and your windows will shatter.
Do you feel like I just described your life? Then, check your foundation! Ask the Holy Spirit to help you do a “home inspection”. He is faithful, honest, and very encouraging with this process. Any week area you find will have to be shored up, or rebuilt. If Jesus isn’t your cornerstone, you will have to start over. But don’t despair; it isn’t as hard as you think. It only takes one step back to Jesus. Repentance just means turning away from the direction you have been going and turning back to Him.
Building only on this foundation, and no other, will help you to live your life in such a way that others will notice. They’ll want what you have. No one wants the house on the block that looks like a wreck, the one that has the leaky roof and the front porch that tilts. They will come to you because your “house” will be the best one on the block. It will be the one still standing after the hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes move through. You may have an occasional “shaky” experience, but you will not live a life full of confusion and fear. Others notice that kind of thing. In these times the world needs some strong, courageous people to lead them, a safe house that they can run to when things get rocky. That’s what the Body of Christ is supposed to be. That’s what it means to be “the light of the world,” and “the salt of the earth.”
I Corinthians 3:10-17 (NIV), “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.”
Book Review for “The Threshold of Eden”- Christian Fiction
I was given a copy of “The Threshold of Eden” by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Wendy Isaac Bergin is a new author for me. Her writing style draws you into the story right away. This one is well written with characters you either love or hate. Flawed people finding friendship, forgiveness, and faith. I don’t agree with all of the Catholic doctrine, but this book is very heart toughing. Be prepared with some Kleenex. There is some mild swearing, no sexual content, and some violence. I can recommend for teens and up, though it is more geared for adults. I give it five stars, I loved it. Will be reading more of this author.
Book Review for “Radiance: Book Four White Road Chronicles” – Christian Fantasy
Ok, so I know I said book three was my favorite, but… this one is even better. The only bone I have to pick is that it isn’t the last book! The next one is supposed to come out sometime early 2016. Wonderful allegory that retells the story of God’s love and forgiveness through his son. Though the words “God” and “Jesus” aren’t used. Good writing, great fantasy with all the quirky characters including some beasts and creatures, and well rounded characters. No sexual content or swearing. There is romance and there is violence. Epic story of good versus evil. I give it five stars, loved it, and can recommend for ages teens and up (and any fantasy love, you do not have to be a Christian to enjoy this book!) While I am waiting for book five, I see the author has written a few “stories” about the White Road, so….
