Book Review for “Slip”- YA Dystopian Fiction

What the book is about:
As sea levels rise and livable landmasses shrink, the Reorganized United States of America has instituted population control measures to ensure there are sufficient resources and food to sustain the growing population. Birth authorization must be paid for and obtained prior to having a child. Someone must die before another can be born, keeping the country in a population neutral position at what experts consider to be the optimal population. The new laws are enforced by a ruthless government organization known as Pop Con, responsible for terminating any children resulting from unauthorized births, and any illegals who manage to survive past their second birthday, at which point they are designated a national security threat and given the name Slip.

But what if one child slipped through the cracks? What if someone knew all the loopholes and how to exploit them? Would it change anything? Would the delicate resource balance be thrown into a tailspin, threatening the lives of everyone?

And how far would the government go to find and terminate the Slip?

In a gripping story of a family torn apart by a single choice, Slip is a reminder of the sanctity of a single life and the value of the lives we so often take for granted.

My Review:
Another great one from David Estes! I thought the “Dweller” series was great, this one is even better. So though I can’t give more than five stars (that’s my star value for Dweller) this one was so much better even. Great characters. This author is great at fleshing out his characters. You feel like you’ve known them your whole life. He also has a canny way of getting into the head of teens. There is a great mix of humor, action, suspense, and some romance. The romantic side is clean and sweet, yet full of teenage passion as well. No swearing, no sexual content (other than a retelling of an attempted rape, not explicit. There is some fighting. I can recommend this book for teens and up. Great story about hope, loyalty to friends and family, and how sometimes the lines between good and evil are blurry. Already reading book two.
As a post script, I appreciate that Mr. Estes puts his book on Kindle unlimited!

Book Review for “Draw of Kings”- Christian Fantasy

untitled

Final book of the series, sad to see it end. I loved the set and this one was the best of all. Great writing, it sucks you into the story. The characters were great and the whole plot rocked your emotions one way or another. Humor, sorrow, hope, and just about every other one you can imagine. Well done! A new favorite author to add to the list. I give it five stars. I also recommend to anyone who loves fantasy or Christian fiction. Great for teens and up. No sexual content or swearing, lot’s of fighting and violence.

Book Review for “Aoleon The Martian Girl: Part Four”- Middle Grade Sci Fi

book 4

What the book is about: Aoleon and Gilbert are on the run – with a whole army of Martians on their trail! Having foiled the Luminon’s plot to disrupt the Martian galact supply, Aoleon and Gilbert join forces with Bizwat – a Procyon commando who poses as a pizza delivery guy, and Helios – a first-generation soldierbot. They flee the Martian megalopolis aboard a flying saucer with the Luminon’s paladin guards in fast pursuit. Their luck quickly goes from bad to worse. Their saucer is blown out of the sky, and they crash deep in the forbidding Martian desert, more than a thousand miles away from their intended destination. Battling starvation, thirst, and a Klyklon dust storm (not to mention a giant slor intent on swallowing them whole), will our two intrepid heroes live long enough to reach the secret base where Aoleon’s parents are being held captive? Dive into part four of Aoleon the Martian Girl to find out! My Review: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Book four in “Aoleon the Martian Girl Series” continues the story of a Martian girl and a Human boy who are out to save Mars and Terran (earth), with the help of some interesting friends and through some scary and funny episodes. This book is as good as the first three. There is appropriate Middle Grade humor and talks about the importance of friendship. The cows on earth begin are being cow -napped while Aoleon and her friends are trying to handle things back on Mars. I give this book four stars. I liked it. I can recommend the series for ages 9-13 or for any sci fi fans who are kids at heart. : Get your copy here: http://www.amazon.com/Aoleon-The-Martian-Girl-Science/dp/0979128579/ref=pd_sim_sbs_14_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=15W2PG74YSW39GN6QNWE The Author: Mr. LeVasseur enjoys crafting good stories based on lovable characters designed to translate well to multiple media formats such as books, games, movies, and toys. Book Review for “Aoleon the Martian Girl: The Hollow Moon”-Middle Grade Sci Fi

book 3

What the book is about: The Hollow Moon (Part 3 of 5) Spying on the Luminon, Aoleon and Gilbert uncover his plot to steal Earth’s milk cows. They make the disturbing discovery that the Martian leader plans to disrupt Mars’ galact supply. Hoping to reach the galactworks before the Luminon’s saboteur, the duo races to warn Aoleon’s father, Deimos, manager at the galactworks, that he is in danger. While still on the run, Aoleon takes her pilot’s exam so she can join the Martian intergalactic exploration fleet. During the test-run, however, something goes horribly wrong. The two are put in a life-threatening situation, and only Bizwat, Aoleon’s Procyon commando friend, can save them. Gilbert finally gets his chance to learn to skyboard, but the lesson turns into a test of skill as he and Aoleon are chased by the Royal Paladin Guards. Will they survive?

My Review: I was given a copy of “The Hollow Moon” in exchange for an honest review.

This is book three in the series and the adventure continues. We finally find out the true nature of the Martian leader and this book is packed with action. There is some violence in this book as there are a few fight scenes. Aoleon and Gilbert are forced into a plot that thickens with every page. The Martian girl series is a good choice for chapter books for middle graders as it is fast paced and full of colorful pictures that are more like movie stills than illustrations.

Great graphics, great humor, and all around sci fi fun.

I give this book four stars. I liked it.

I can recommend for ages 9-13, though adult sci fi fans, who are kids at heart, would enjoy it as well.

Book Review for “Aoleon The Martian Girl: Science Fiction Saga Part 2 The Luminess of Mars”- Middle Grade Sci Fi

24834713

What the book is about: Aoleon and Gilbert are entrusted with a mission from PAX, a wanted criminal and leader of the Martian resistance movement. He wants them to investigate the Luminon of Mars, who he suspects is planning an invasion of Earth to steal its milk cows. Gilbert has an encounter with the Luminess (the mate of the Luminon) and discovers something strange about her. The undercover duo is chased by the Royal Paladin Guard.

At Aoleon’s home, Gilbert meets Aoleon’s sister Una, mother Phobos and father Deimos as well as her overzealous pet, Zoot. He is also introduced to Bizwat, a covert operator and Procyon Commando, who uses his Saturn Pizza delivery job as a cover.

Gilbert then gets to visit Aoleon’s school, the Martian Space Academy, where he encounters Aoleon’s nemesis, Charm Lepton, and her friend Quarkina. While there, he attends a history lecture on the Martian people by Plutarch Xenocrates. After class, Gilbert and Aoleon get to do some intense training in zero-G and Gilbert is treated to a Psi-ball match between Martian Space Academy and Martian Science Academy.

My Review: I was given a copy of “Aoleon The Martian Girl: Science Fiction Saga – Part 2 The Luminess of Mars” in exchange for an honest review.
This is book two of the series. We continue on with Gilbert on Mars with Aoleon. In this book we see more about what Martian life is like, including school. We meet new characters, some evil and some funny. The same humor continues in this one. There is a reference to a “Viagrian who gets easily excited.” I give this one three stars, I liked it. (I did have an issue with some of the pictures showing the Martian girls, though fully clothed, but with clear nipple outlines…and this is for middle grade age). Still great story and wonderful graphics.
The plot thickens.
I can recommend for ages 9-13.

Book Review for “Aoleon The Martion Girl”- Middle Grade Sci F

51E5+SmNmPL__UY250_

I was given a copy of “Aoleon The Martian Girl” in exchange for an honest review.

What the book is about: “Mars wants our cows (yes, cows!), and they’re sending an invasion fleet to take them from us. Only Gilbert and Aoleon the Martian Girl stand in their way!”

Gilbert always longed for adventure, but now that he has it, he’s not sure that it’s everything it’s cracked up to be. Ever since the night he met Aoleon the Martian Girl sitting in the middle of a crop circle in Farmer Johnson’s field, it’s been nothing but one wild ride after another.

From fighting off swarms of giant killer robots to dealing with strange aliens from another world – never mind trekking across the vast Martian desert and skyboarding deep into the center of a (hopefully) extinct volcano – Gilbert has had his hands full just trying to keep up with it all. And now it’s up to him and his new friend, Aoleon, to face off against the evil Martian overlord and keep our cows safe at home where they belong.

My Review: Aoleon The Martian Girl was a fun read! Fast paced with quirky characters, other planets, alien life forms, and UFO’s. The story line is geared for middle grade readers and the humor reflects that fact. The entire book from cover to cover is filled with great pictures. They are not your typical illustrations, but look more like movie stills. Gilbert meets Aoleon while she is on earth making crop circles. Soon they are running from an irate farmer and end up back on Mars. Gilbert finds out that life on Mars is similar, yet very weird.

A great start to the series. Good writing, maybe a tad too much scientific jargon for me. I think that anyone who likes sci fi with humor would enjoy the book even if they are older than the target group. I liked the book and will be continuing on with the rest of the series.
